Sometimes the guard is 'in love' with a prisoner; sometimes very frightened of a prisoner or is being blackmailed; sometimes the guard is bent and is being paid a lot of money by someone outside.
I agree about the screen between visitors and prisoners, there should be no physical contact. Better still use Skype or Facetime
