They originally planned to abstain. But a few days before the vote in the Commons we witness heavy handed Policing at the vigil for Sarah Everard. Many people were shocked at the Police tactics and that led to many Labour MPs not wanting to give the Police further powers at peaceful protests. Labour switched position from abstaining to voting against the bill.

Ironically, it was Labour MPs who had campaigned for tougher sentences for attacking emergency workers, they considered the 2018 change in the law not tough enough.
// The law change in 2018 also means that when a person is convicted of offences including sexual assault or manslaughter, the judge must consider tougher sentences if the victim is an emergency worker.
Last year, Labour MP Holly Lynch, who campaigned for the change alongside fellow Labour MP Chris Bryant, warned the new law was not proving enough of a deterrent.
Ms Lynch said she welcomed the consultation but said it was "frustrating" she and Mr Bryant had wanted to increase the maximum sentence to two years in 2018 but the Conservative government instead set the maximum at 12 months. //

"And he doesn't know what a woman is."
He'd soon know what a woman ISN'T if he was shagged up the jacksie by a woman with a penis!
Seriously though, why is it so so difficult to simply say "a woman does not have a penis." Why are some people tying themselves up in knots over something that is (a) true, and (b) probably 99.99999% of the population agree with.
