so we finally realise that if we went to get away from Fossil fuels we need nuclear power. Renewables all help of course but they are very expensive and cannot do the heavy lifting we need. So well done to the government for finally waking up and smelling the coffee. Oh and while you are at it, close down that Drax abomination too.

It was partly hesitancy over nuclear power that has landed Germany in the predicament it now finds itself.
Only thing is, after Ukraine thought will need to be given to making them as “war proof” as possible.

It was. Until they decided to start burning freshly felled trees and the owners conned the government (or more properly energy bill payers) into paying huge subsidies (£4bn and counting) to do so.

The Olkiluoto Nuclear plant in Finland was supposed to herald the renaissance of Nuclear in Europe when it was commissioned in 2000. It finally came on stream in 2018, 11 years late, and cost 3 times the original estimate to build.

Three times the original estimate will be laughed at by UK 'experts' in massive projects, otherwise known as thieves and liars.

A minimum six times over budget and excessive ongoing costs once the point of no return has been reached are essential for all UK government approved projects.

Small thinking doesn't get board appointments for former MPs and ministers, going forward.

Kodak went bankrupt 10 years ago. Funny thing was, they invented the digital camera but suppressed it. They were worried about losing sales of photographic paper and developing chemicals. So they hid the technology for years. But the patents ran out, and they were sunk.

I expect Tora has given it some thought. So have I. The best thing that Drax can do to help combat climate change is to convert its boilers back to coal. That has two advantages:

- reducing emissions (because burning wood results in far more emissions per unit of electricity produced than does burning coal).

- continuing to provide much needed reliable electricity.

But since converting back to coal would be is seen as equivalent to committing genocide on a global scale, the best thing to do is close it down. That way emissions are reduced. The fact that businesses and households are likely to suffer power cuts and that these will lead to hardship and possible risks to life and limb is surely no reason to continue allowing Drax to spew out more emissions than are necessary. And I've not even begun to consider the advantages that stopping deforestation of an area half the size of Wales each year will bring.

In a Government Statement that should be broadcast today, an energy spokesman would say that "We would like to assure the taxpayer that a Nuclear Power Station can be built for less than the cost of a couple of Scottish Ferries, in half the time, and of benefit to millions of citizens rather than a few thousand". Sadly it won't be.
