Chief Of Russia’s Armed Forces Wounded In Ukraine

Ukrainian news agency UNIAN reports that Gen Valery Gerasimov was wounded in an attack in Izyum (city of the poisoned cakes) yesterday afternoon which killed 20 of Russia’s top military brass and wounded many others.
It’s believed 11 Russian generals have been taken out since the war began. It begs the observation: someone is putting some intelligence from somewhere to mighty good use.
Meanwhile another huge fire in Belgorod and a bridge down in the Kursk region …

I have always thought that generals did their work some distance from the front line, in planning and directing. Have I got it wrong? It seems odd that generals should be in the front line, taking all the bombs and bullets. Who's doing the planning, if the top brass are out there, in the trenches?

From an analysis I read (here?) the Russian army is ill-disciplined and does not have a strong contingent of NCOs so maybe the higher ranks have to put themselves at risk to direct front line troops.

Judging by your analysis, davebro, someone at the top in Russia hasn't got a real grasp of how to run a war. I wonder who that could be?

Yes Dave is correct.
The chain of command is evidently very weak in the middle and is in any case too long. They were supposed to have simplified it, but then that leads to what you see here.
Its v likely Ukraine is getting real time tracking info from the US: that was whet led Ukraine to be able to shoot down a transport plane at the start of the war carrying hundreds to the Kyiv Hostomel airbase. Had that landed …

I did read a while back that unless generals and such like, hard liners are there in the thick of it, your bog standard Russia is not following orders to fight or advance. It said they are threatening to shoot them should they be seen to do otherwise. But who knows what is true or false now?

It surprises me how Russia appears incompetent in Ukraine and have so many officers killed. Putin has sent a second rate army into war. Lets hope it gets worse for them.

I too have been wondering how they mange to hit so many. The Generals etc are of course there because they have problems in the rank and file but still, how are there positions getting out?

Satellites can only do so much, it has to be coming from the ground. Maybe disgruntled Russians or is it deeper and there are challenges coming from the FSB for power in Moscow?

I wondered about informants in the russian army who were ethinic ukrainians - -
the other thing is - along with the viddie of the chechen being blown up whilst his phone was transmitting
is they followed/tracked the phone signal....

what is a russian grunt / baldric called? presumably they have been told that personal phones are a discipline issue

Indeed, it was claimed that a major reason the hit squads sent into Kyiv to kill Zelensky failed was because of a mole in the FSB.
It was striking to hear tho how close Zelensky came to being killed or captured. He could apparently hear the hostile gunfire outside the compound which his protectors had hastily barricaded with boxes! And his wife and kids were still there at that time.
