As I said earlier, young - a person can be disciplined for taking too much sick leave, especially if it is mainly just a day or two.
My workplace gave 6 months full pay sick leave each year but I can't think of anyone that took that much, with the exception of one man who had a stroke.
Just because the option is available it doesn't mean it will be taken by every woman in the right age bracket.

young, maternity leave and all the time off women are allowed when pregnant doesn't put good employers off.
The Spanish system proposes that the government would cover the cost, not the employer. Yes, it is blerdy inconvenient when staff don't turn up for work but the women who need to take time off aren't turning up now - whether it is sick leave, emergency annual leave or unpaid leave.
Time off for severe period pain should not be lumped in with sick leave - women will still need the same sick leave provision as men for non-gender based ailments and injuries.

Barry, you can have all the outrage you like, but the reality is people running companies have to be hard nosed. Or they go broke.
This will potentially alienate all women who will get lumped into the bucket and make it harder to a) get employment and b) promotion. It also promotes the(wrong in my opinion) view of the 'weaker sex'.
And on the subject of maternity, yes this still puts employers off women of a certain age. And oddly I have seen this from other older women!!

The UK Govt states that companies can claimback the SMP theypay. They are entitled to claim back at least 92%. Small employers are able to claim back all the SMP plus some compensation.
How is this different to Spain?

I probably would have welcomed this when a young single woman (until I went on the pill). My first day every month was HELL, heavy bleeding, clots and terrific pain, but strangely only on the first day. Dad used to give me whisky in hot water, which I hated, but bless him he was trying to help me and I was grateful. I also used the old hot water bottle too. I never took any time off work, just loads of painkillers and muddled through. Would I have been glad of that one day off a month back then - hell yes !!! Somehow though, I can't see it becoming law.
