good move for the provision of "safe" spaces for women? or a retrograde step in the general move toward inclusivity?

I do not have a problem with them if they are designed correctly. But there will be an embarrassment problem.
William, it is separate male and female toilets that will be compulsory, not unisex, mixed sex, any sex, gender neutral. The old fashioned gents and ladies you are used to must be provided in public buildings
"Single sex toilets" = ones for one sex only
"Same sex toilets" = ones not for one sex only

It's the former which are being made conpulsory but only in large buildings. We already have "same sex" toilets. But no one complains about that as they are just called "toilets" :-)
Much confusion here. This from Ichkeria's link makes it clear.

//Government sources confirm move to curb the sole installation of gender-neutral facilities//

Separate toilets - male and female.
Idiocy. Most want privacy, and especially from the opposite sex during such private moments.
OG, read the previous answers. It means than new public buildings must have toilets for gents only and other toilets for women only
people are so keen to have their outrage, they dont even bother to read the discussion
Mind you i'm guilty of that too sometimes i expect :)
And some others only read the headlimes before venting, especially on the DM website
