Extraordinary that he now attacks Sunak for being 'a high tax chancellor' and blames the treasury for fiscal incompetence. One can only wonder why he didn't express these views when he had some say in government and wonder why Boris didn't heed what his close mate thought.

Yet another reason why absolutely nobody from the Johnson cabinet can stand for leadership, they’ve all got the Johnson kite mark, they’re tarnished. The leader must come from one of the 148 who went against Johnson in the VONC and the cabinet must be made up from them too.

I think Mr Rees-Mogg's carefully cultivated and maintained 'Minister for 1872' image hides a razor-sharp mind and a political antennae with few equals.
