how would you feel if your boss frequently asked you to repeat lines on national TV that turned out to be untrue one or two days later? i suspect you wouldn't want to do it anymore... trouble is if you're an MP it is your job to defend the party in public so either you switch sides or change the leadership to one you think you can defend...
obviously this is from the perspective of MPs and ministers rather than the broader issues... which should have dissuaded them from ever choosing Johnson in first place back in 2019.

the downing street line would have come from the prime minister naomi... especially as it concerned whether or not he personally knew about previous allegations against pincher, it could not have come from anyone else...
