It's a combination of the satisfying feeling that you're in on some secret knowledge that the ordinary sheeple aren't, and a desire to believe that there's a hidden controlling power behind everything which gives it meaning, presumably because the thought that there isn't is too unpalatable.
Twas ever thus that the feeble minded could be manipulated by cynical charlatans for malicious purposes.

One is a genuine desire to oppose the forces of evil - can't fault them for that.
The other is a default position to disbelieve the official version of anything that comes from the authorities. Again, can't really blame them as we do get lied to an awful lot.
It doesn't make them any less feeble minded though.

The bloke PP is referencing, I believe, was more a talker than a doer. A blowhard. No prize, I'm sure.
But the most interesting aspect of the case, apart from the 7+yr sentence, is that it was his son that secretly recorded his tales of imaginary derring-do and 'dobbed' him in to the FBI.
Pretty *** up, eh?
