A Year Of Taliban Rule In Afghanistan
Under Taliban rule quality of life for women in Afghanistan is deteriorating rapidly, as this link illustrates.

I watched a documentary the other day about a women's hospital that has just one female doctor. Only females are allowed to treat females and since girls are no longer educated beyond the age of about 11 or 12, it follows that for women an aspiration to a career in any professional capacity is futile. A thing of the past. The unavoidable consequence of this appalling neglect is that very soon there will be no teachers for women and no access to medical treatment. A truly terrifying prospect.
What can the wider world do? What should it do? Or should it sit by and do nothing?

The world should provide safe passage to all Afghan women to leave the country and find a better life somewhere else. Leave the Afghan men to their own devices ...

I thought it was a waste of time invading Afghanistan. In retrospect I was wrong, the huge mistake was invading Iraq. We were doing much better in Afghanistan than I predicted, but we (I mean the US and UK in particular but they weren't alone) then divided our attention and our forces, and ended up losing two wars where we might have won one.
There was no possible good outcome, unless you're an Afghan male; but the lesson is that if you must wage war, be prepared to fight to the end.

//12:21, I've mentioned neither on this thread.//
But the usual 5C rubbish and accusations abound, thereby ending any hope of a sensible discussion.
I actually believe we should leave them to it and never set foot there again but hey, I’m a 5Cer apparently so my opinion counts for nought.

gromit said; "We* should never have invaded Afghanistan.
We* should not have stayed for 20 years. "
I said: "ok but we(*) did invade, how long should we have stayed? Given that we(*) stayed for 20 years and you accuse us of "running away" that sounds like you disapprove of "running away" so do you think we(*) should have stayed indefinitely? "
- so why do you insult my perfectly reasonable resulting question?

gromit: ok I am running out of ways to ask this but I'll give it another go: you said:
"We* should never have invaded Afghanistan.
We* should not have stayed for 20 years. " - I agree.
...but given that we did invade, how long do you think we should have stayed? You say not 20 years, fair enough but we did stay for 20 years so should we have left when we did (ie run away as you condescendingly put it) or should we have stayed longer? or indefinitely even? Should we have left shortly after invasion? Some time in the interim? These are obvious things to ask Gromit, surprised they seem to be beyond you. I do accept and 100% agree with your stance:
//"We* should never have invaded Afghanistan.
We* should not have stayed for 20 years. " // - but I am asking you to consider what should we have done given that we did invade. I hope that's now clear.
