Should There Be A G E If A Sitting P M Resigns As Party Leader?
40 Answers
Lets say that if a sitting PM resigns then parliament is dissolved and there must be a GE in say 8 weeks. I think that would be the fairest way to do it. Discuss.

The Conservative Party should elect a new leader and should become the Prime Minister in the normal way.
The speed at which the leader is selected should be vastly speeded up. The current contest is far too slow.
Perhaps a Deputy leader should be elected to take over immediately on something happening to the PM, like the US Vice President.

I agree gromit, I think the current system is fine I was just trying to explore what the alternative is. Several on here with no idea keep calling for a GE now so I thought I'd find out what the pros and cons of that are. One thing, for example is, would Boris even have been deposed if the party knew that would trigger a GE?
Fatti, instead of raging all the time why not try and engage in the intended discussion? I started this thread to explore your suggestion of a GE now and how it could come about in the future if the law was changed by the next time the sitting PM resigns mid term. Do you have any points to make on that? or do you just want to have a go at me?

The Party decide who their leader should be. So the Party should elect the Vice PM.
I know I should support the full party membership having the final say, more democratic and all that, I am not sure it is a good system. It introduces a lengthy delay when no one wants that, and they have a habit of making the wrong decision.
The Labour Party membership elected Corbyn, who was a terrible leader of the Opposition. And the Conservative Party membership elected Boris, who was a terrible Prime Minister.

Lol, if I’m raging then you’re seething, still living in forlorn hope of a return when in reality The Gargantuan Liar will never again darken the door of a cabinet meeting room, resigned to the back benches where he’ll languish for no more than 18 months before exiting stage left for good.
There’s nothing to discuss, he’s gone, finished, toast.
Get used to it.

11 posts in and I’m invited to engage in the discussion? Not a 5Cer this evening?
Or is that because as I’ve pointed out the lady in your avatar image is by your own parameters the biggest ever!
A Remainer and anti monarchist who slagged off British workers.
You can’t get any more ‘anti British’ than that as you said yesterday!
Wake up and smell what you’re shovelling! PMSL.

Tora,
We vote for our MP. We should let them decide who they want to leader them. They can vote on that in an afternoon in a special sitting of the party MPs.
As I said on another recent thread, I don’t believe that Johnson is finished in politics. I can see him contesting the 2025 London Mayoral elections.
He liked being Mayor.
He did little harm.
Similar pay as PM but for a part time job.
He can resume his journalism and writing and TV work to boost his earnings.

hm. When Crossrail was begun, passing through Heathrow on its way to farthest Essex, Boris blocked a plan to have it stop at London City Airport as well (the one in Docklands).
His reason: he was at the time promoting Boris Island, an imaginary site in the Thames estuary where he was going to build a whole new airport, and he wanted to strangle LCY. Which is why a major new regional train line passes two London airports but only stops at one of them.
Considering one of the points of Crossrail was to funnel business (and other) visitors as quickly as possible from airport to downtown without further clogging up the tube, this was selfish lunacy.
