There are hundreds of economists in The Treasury, the Bank of England and God knows how many quangos. Can it really be the case that Truss was not warned about the dangers of her actions, that the majority of them were wrong or that advice they gave was ignored? Surely all three possibilities are bizarre. Which leaves what?

Sunak told her often enough in the leadership contest.
But again, not revealing the OBR reports made it worse. The published plan made it catastrophic.
The Werthers Warriors weren’t keen on Sunak(for reasons one can only guess) so went for ‘the one who looks like that Maggie woman we voted for a couple of decades ago’.
Now they’ll reap the whirlwind. Ironic that with the onset of winter the weather and economic conditions/hardships will see them lose a lot of that demographic in a couple of months.

Incredible that tonight they keep wheeling out the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Kwarteng/Truss nowhere to be found.
Coincidentally I was just watching one of the leadership debates where Rishi Sunak clearly explained why Truss’ scheme wouldn’t work.

He’s now sitting on a big fat pile of ‘told ya so’.
It is actually incredible that the UK central bank has had to step in to protect the UK from the actions of the UK's own government!

I mean, just think of that for a moment!

A humiliation
Well I might be a werthers warrior,as a lot of my associates are . But we were all anti Truss. She's a complete disaster. She needs to go and quickly. She's nothing like Maggie. I wish people would drop giving certain age groups stupid titles.

sp: Wholly humiliating. Appalling and I'm ashamed of my Party.
according to various press reports, government departments are now being asked to identify spending cut opportunities. well I suppose that was inevitable - the high earner tax cuts have to be funded somehow.

Mush: Every government says it will crack down on 'waste' and 'inefficiencies'. They never do.

Might be worth remembering that Werthers are not traditional sweets. It's just their marketing ploy.

Now BBC and Sky are giving half their news bulletins over to one-to-ones with Starmer. Quite extraordinary.
Truss is apparently going to speak tomorrow.

I'm worried that immediately after she speaks things will get worse and my pension fund will shrink again.
The power of advertising.
Werther’s are a traditional German sweet.
The kindly grandfather reminiscing about having a Werther’s original as a boy must have been in the Hitler youth, because they didn’t reach our shores until the 1970s.
I think, in fairness, the "fiscal event" is the responsibility of the person who issued it, Kwarteng. Prime ministers over the years have selected their chancellors, discussed policy with them, and stood by them at least as long as the next reshuffle, but they don't usually take direct responsibility for budgets.
Jno. But basically she has to take the responsibility. She has absolutely no umphhh. She is not our mp but her area meets ours. She's a disaster!
well, I can't disagree, but Kwarteng needs to be the guy in the front line. He had one job to do...

You never saw Nigel Lawson getting Thatcher to defend his budgets, or Gordon Brown handing over to Blair.
Imagine what Kwarteng might have done about Covid and the furlough scheme. Actually, no, it doesn't bear thinking about.
Is it too late to call Rishi?
The chancellor (and his team) never just thinks up a budget and delivers it without the PM being involved all along, and ultimately signing it off. The PM is as responsible as him.
John Redwood was interviewed on Channel 4 News tonight and laid the blame for the debacle firmly at the feet of the Bank of England!
Truss and Kwarteng are both contributors to Britannia Unchained…. a book which reads like an undergraduate essay written four hours before the deadline….

the reason they are doing this is political dogma… i don’t think advice comes into it…
