Sq Ldr George "Johnny" Johnson, aged 101, dies peacefully in his sleep. R.I.P.

Story broke this morning on BBC Breakfast and they put out a lovely tribute to him on the lunch time news.

True heroes, all of them. Spent a wonderful weekend at the Petwood Hotel, Woodhall Spa, soaking up the atmosphere of that famous squadron.

Jimmy, the story went, spent the day of his 21st birthday bombing the Eder Dam.

god they were so young.
I looked ( before retiring) at the young men working around me and thought - god you were flying planes and shooting up Germans 80y ago.
Thankfully, today's teenagers aren't called to such bloodbaths. But it's a bit unkind to assume they wouldn't acquit themselves equally if they were called upon - we must pray that they won't be.

One thing that I always have noticed is when such men from our services die and there is an interview with them broadcast - they, without exception, seem such modest gentleman, quite reserved and always insistent on pointing out that their comrades who fell were the heroes, not themselves.

I trust that this man will have a funeral befitting the hero he was.
R.I.P. sir and thank you.
