I looked ( before retiring) at the young men working around me and thought - god you were flying planes and shooting up Germans 80y ago.
Thankfully, today's teenagers aren't called to such bloodbaths. But it's a bit unkind to assume they wouldn't acquit themselves equally if they were called upon - we must pray that they won't be.
One thing that I always have noticed is when such men from our services die and there is an interview with them broadcast - they, without exception, seem such modest gentleman, quite reserved and always insistent on pointing out that their comrades who fell were the heroes, not themselves.
I trust that this man will have a funeral befitting the hero he was.
