In some jurisdictions ( every state is difft) the court will just determine the need for institutional care ( joovie hall)
and the rest is left to the social services

Sorry but this goes much further than having a gun. The fact the child thought it acceptable to pull a gun on anyone should be addressed. I was brought up with guns and I have a photo of me at six years old shooting a 2.2 at a target. Dad belonged to a gun club. I was also taught the safety aspects: what not to do ever, what to do always, and we did target shooting, nothing more, as my dad would never shoot an animal for sport.
Yes, the parents should be held accountable.
