They should congratulate their staff, emphasising that they have obviously cracked on and demonstrated that they can get five days' work done in four. What will follow, they should say, is an increase in workload to fill the fifth day as they were obviously slacking prior to the experiment.

Over the last 15 years of my working life I faced having to achieve the same goals with fewer and fewer resources . I think I did once have a strong “work ethic” but that experience ground me down. I was encouraged to work on past retirement age which I did but eventually it became drudgery with no positive aspects. I chucked it and retired, best thing I ever did
