Is Gary Lineker Correct?

I don't think so. This country cannot cope with more illegal immigrants. We just haven't got the capacity for them. And we need a really strong deterrent, but is this action strong enough by the govt? And will it work?

Lineker is a bit of a prat it has to be said. On the one hand he gets all righteously indignant about attempts to stop the boats and that he will "continue to speak up", and yet on the other he's perfectly happy to spend 6 weeks in Qatar, which has a dreadful record of treatment of people. If he was genuine, he would have refused to attend the World Cup and foregone the...

Sweller and Richy must be relieved at being able to deflect attention from this ill-conceived, ineffective, expensive, and possibly illegal plan towards the wingnut. The Tories have tried similar plans before, and they haven't worked. They understaffed the Home Office, so asylum applications didn't got processed, leading to the amnesty. Ludicrous. And still they don't chase the organisers of this deadly traffic, some of whom (we are told) live in this country.
Not sure what's happened here, the 5C seem to be ignoring the obvious. There are safe and legal routes into the UK for asylum seekers, here is the government documentation.

it says at the top: "What safe and legal immigration routes are available to people wanting to come to the UK for humanitarian reasons, how many people use them, and what is the Government's position on establishing more?"- on my planet I'd have said that fleeing persecution etc are the reasons (if genuine) people apply for asylum. Would that not come under "humanitarian reasons"?

naomi... you don't know what you are talking about... an asylum seeker can still have their application accepted even if they arrive illegally
the routes in tora's link refers to people who have been offered refuge already by the uk government such as specific ukranians afghans or people from hong kong (within strict requirements)and their families... these people are not the same as asylum seekers because they have already been offered refuge... an asylum seeker is more like an applicant seeking to become a refugee.
to claim asylum in the UK you need to be in the UK... this is a relatively recent rule change and did not used to be the case... furthermore there is no legal way to enter the UK for the purposes of claiming asylum... which is why you have not been able to name any routes by which a person can do so
gary lineker is quite right when he says there are no safe and legal routes to claim asylum in the UK

I believe that Bravermans' proposal clearly states that there is a more than 50% chance that it is unlawful. Why can't the legality or otherwise be sorted out before pushing this as a policy? The Tories seem to be so desperate that they try to push dodgy goods in the hope that they will have such public appeal that the law doesn't matter and could possibly be changed in retrospect if necessary. That's a rotten way to run a country.
Surely Lineker’s position in society does not ban him from having an opinion, but it is still hypocritical for someone like him to make such statements, especially on or via a public service Broadcaster. Issues surrounding illegal and uncontrolled immigration do not affect people in his position , so who is he to be sounding off about it. Of course he works in the media and there no such thing as bad publicity
