Honestly, I know most politicians are out of touch with the public these days but this one is taking the biscuit.

Well I've been drinking real ale since before it went out of fashion and then made a resurgence. If I go for a liquid lunch with my friends in London I will drink probably four or five pints. At no time in my drinking "career" have I ever concerned myself with the calories it contained. I'm fortunate that I don't have to watch my weight and my health is fairly robust so it matters not a jot to me whether a pint of beer contains 250 calories (the average for a 5% ABV ale), 200 or 300 (and there are not many real ales that would fall outside that range). What concerns me more than anything is the taste and it does not concern me how many calories my ale contains. If I had to be careful of either I doubt I'd drink beer at all (or at least not in the quantities I enjoy). This is an utter nonsense because anybody who is concerned about calories to the extent that +/- 30 calories would determine their choice should not drink beer at all.

You could ask that about all nutritional labels on food items. I don’t read them and I doubt most other people don’t. But some do, and some people find it useful.
Beer labels and pumps state the alcohol content. That certainly influences my purchasing. I suspect if the nutritional information was there, then people would use it.

They're having a Turkish! Yes we know booze is fattening we don't need reminding! I get annoyed when I'm in a harvester type place and the burger I'm about to order turns out to be a gazillion calories! Doesn't affect my order but it does sort of taint the enjoyment! Last thing I need is the same thing in a battle cruiser!
