And already it has been revealed that the government failed to consider the massive impact of lockdown.

I’m looking forward to the inquiry investigating the Tories giving money to their mates for dodgy PPE – Sunak will be wondering who the hell was Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time, giving all this public money away.

Hi ! me
as you chortle on, remember that 200 000 people died

or as Woy from Aus wd say ( and a surprising number of other Abers) - died from the covid vaccine that didnt work....

Relatives of those 200,000 won’t be happy bunnies when the inquiry finds that many died needlessly, due to this government’s incompetence and corruption.
Did I hear this correctly that this inquiry could take four years? Really?

I’ll complete the inguiry in a couple of sentences.

(1) locking down was a stupid mistake.
(2) paying people to sit on their backsides for two years was a mistake.

Inguiry completed - where’s my knighthood?
I, and hundreds of thousands of others, will be forever grateful to Rishi Sunak for the furlough scheme. I couldn't give two hoots about where the PPE was sourced from- it was an emergency and things had to be done quickly and without the restrictions of normal protocols. Your glee is, at best, distasteful.
And already it has been revealed that the government failed to consider the massive impact of lockdown.

Have you any idea of what Keir Starmer's position was on lockdown?
Can I have my Damehood alongside your Knighthood Deskdiary?
No-one listened to any other points of view.
Keir Starmers position on lockdown is neither here nor there.

Try to stay with the actualite' rather than whataboutery.
Spungle, "Your glee is, at best, distasteful." Hear, hear!
If we hadn't locked down it would have been very difficult to trade as usual with other countries. Most of them were in lockdown.

I'll post as I see fit thank you very much.
His position was more a cheerleader for the government rather than opposition. He was complicit in the madness, as were every mainstream news outlet.

Pointing out that Labour failed to consider the massive impact of lockdown isn't whataboutery.

He also wanted Sunak to give stupid amounts of money out like confetti.

We were *** whoever was in charge.

Spungle at 9.38.

You wouldn’t have needed to be paid by the taxpayer had the stupid decision to lockdown not been made. Although it does beg the question whether you’re a needed employee if the only reason you remain employed throughout Covid is because I paid your wages.
I am not spoiling for an argument but can someone explain just what would have happened had there not been a lockdown?
The vast majority who died were very old and had other health issues. As I said at the time, people die and destroying the country's economy and locking the young up so that some very elderly people could live a few more years was ludicrous. Yes it's sad for families but that's life, people die every day, get over it.
The average age of people who died of Covid was 80 yrs. As dave said, they already had serious health issues anyway. Over 90% of deaths occurred in people who had one, or all of, the following: heart disease; dementia; type 1 diabetes, according to figures from PHE at the time.

Those were the people who needed protecting most, but instead were shunted out of hospitals into care homes, where there were hardly any medical professionals to look after them, and so they became the most vulnerable and subsequently paid the price of a government that didn't have a kn clue what it was doing.

There is a common thread to my posts highlighting the present Tory government’s corruption and incompetence from the Tory faithful.

Rather than try to defend the actions of the Tories, or simply admit that the political party they support is corrupt/incompetent – their response is to claim Labour or some other political party would be just as bad/worse.

No wonder our government gets away with such corrupt/incompetent behaviour, if that is the response of a large section of the electorate.
many of the companies paid for sourcing PPE had never done it before and had in fact no links to the sector at all... in some cases if i am not mistaken the PPE was never actually delivered at all

the only thing that qualified such companies was that they were close to members of the government, who gave them enormous wedges of public money

i am unfamiliar with the evidence regarding the effectiveness of lockdowns but considering the properties of the virus were unknown and no vaccine was available then it seems to me like a wise decision though i would be interested to see evidence to the contrary...

unfortunately the first month or so was entirely wasted on a "herd immunity" strategy and so our lockdowns came on very late because of boris johnson's poor and lazy leadership

the fact that the conservatives voted for the iraq war does not let labour off the hook for doing something so evil and nor do the positions of Starmer absolve the tories of anything
I gave up following the political insanity dealing with Covid, but I don't recall massive opposition from the rest of parliament at the time. No one seemed to have the common sense to instinctively know the right things to be done. Same applied to most posters here too.
i think “common sense” applies to whether or not you should buy cheese from a man in the pub or how to clean your kitchen rather than how to deal with a global pandemic!

I didn't agree with lockdown or what I saw as all the unnecessary furlough payments, but I did as I was asked to do because I thought then, as I think now, that the government and the scientists were faced with an unknown and, in the circumstances, did what they considered right at the time. The government tried to support workers and businesses and actually did that magnificently, and their response to the urgent need for a vaccine was second to none. All credit to them for that. It's easy to criticise - and clearly some people relish it - but it should be acknowledged that everything is clearer in retrospect.
