Every big event is of its time, and hindsight is pointless.
Anything and everything from voting fir Brexit to wearing that dodgy flares-and-tanktop combo in 1974 - everything can be reassessed with hindsight, and would be done differently.
But it's irrelevant.
We do what we do at the time.
With that time over again we might do differently.
But we can't, so it's pointless thinking about it.
We make our choices, we live with them, good bad or indifferent

Gastarbeiter. Do you know what that means? Germany as well as a lot of Continental Europe including the Netherlands,Sweden Finland and Norway ran this scheme. This was in the early 60s long before Brexit. These countries also retired Foreign Labour. Germany had the Turks and British building for them. Remember Auf Wiedersen Pet. That was Gastarbeiter. It happens from time to time and nothing to do with Brexit.

I thought I was the 'troll' - but I am not ( a troll: memo to self, I am writing on AB) - I recollect ( imperfect memory I regret) that the gast arbeiter program was ended because there were defects
and not ended, because it was a raving success.
Not as bad as Merkel about her policy of OStpoliticak ( kissing the russians in short) - " I have been wrong for 20y" and she left
Now I think, that was a reference to Ts ar Nicholas II who resisted demands to abdicate with the question - "have I been wrong for 25 y?" - and the British AMbassador who was in the room on that fateful day, replied: " yes your majesty"
