Imagine if all those cars had been self driving, programmed to follow road laws, how on earth would the police be able to get them to turn round and do that?
That's just one of the many problems.

I heard AI described as a programme similar to predictive text.
The robot (or whatever) can only do what is a normal action in a situation, it is totally based on experience or memory programmed into it.
It can't suddenly decide to go for a walk or buy a pizza.
What the future holds is something that none of us will ever know.

I don't think you can say that AI is a terrible name, or is never true by definition, because intelligence itself is hard to define in a watertight way.
Also, "never" is a very long time, particularly for problems that are, in some sense, merely "technical". Humans have proven very good at overcoming technical problems.
That's not to say that I'm convinced that this sort of thing will definitely be possible in future. At least as far as robots playing table tennis goes, I'm not sure it'll ever be an 'urgent'-enough problem to get the attention (time, money, resources) needed to solve it.
