If they were safe in France, why would they set out on a perilous journey? What is here that they don't have in France. They are safe there; they can apply for asylum there. What makes them set off?

I suppose the authorities could attack the problem at source, dealing with the salesmen, gang masters and their bosses at the top of the pyramid.

douglas9401, im sure they are trying that, problem is who where? and someone else will fill the void if there caught, like drugs it's a business, and business is good, as iv said only gunboat diplomacy will work..horrible as it sounds, a few thousand sunk trying will send a message..it's got to that point sadly.
