You normally find that most who support such are x smokers, they can be a reall pain preaching to others. To answer no, get on with the reall issues or you will be gone. I enjoy my vape, and take whatever risks come with such. No one elses business. I gave up ciggies way back, and that was my choice.
What next?....Only allowed one trip out in your gas-guzzler?
Well the ULEZ fiasco in London goes a long way to demonstrate that your idea (which I imagine you made tongue-in-cheek) is not out of the question, Ken. Of course if Mayor khan had any scruples, he would simply have banned non-compliant vehicles entirely from London's roads. This would have ensured they did not contribute at all to the 4,000 deaths he says occur anually because of toxic air. But he didn't do that and drivers of such vehicles can kill as many people as they like provided they pay £12.50 a day for the privilege.
Far worse than that, there is a large contingent of the eco movement who have set their sights on air travel. Nearly all want to see private jets banned entirely. Other suggestions are the banning of all domestic flights and the limitation of international flights to 1 or 2 (or choose any number under about four) of return trips per annum. Others suggest increasingly expensive Air PassengerDuty (so as to make flying the preserve of the wealthy). On the fringes are those who would see civilian aircraft banned altogether.
But back to Tora's question: cannabis possession is prohibited in the UK. It is a class B drug and the offence carries a maximum sentence of five years custody. But its possession for personal use has been all but decriminalised by the police. Along with shoplifting, they simply will not deal with low-level offences. So how does Mr Sunak expect them to deal with possession and smoking of tobacco should it be criminalised? Supplies will be plentiful since no other country apart from New Zealand seems to have any similar plans and the sale of them will simply move underground (a move that means the government will lose out on the estimated £10bn a year that is raised from taxes on tobacco.
I'm afraid this is simply another idea that has not been thought through properly and will simply fade into the background as the practicalities are investigated.
My dumb late BIL nearly blew his house up. He was slowly dying of emphysema, housebound and on Oxygen. He decided to light up and boom. It was the quickest short back and sides moins beard and eyebrows he ever had.
Our local pub has ash bins on the wall by the two double doors. As TTT states the butts still get dumped on the pavement or in the gutter. There's a free standing sign instructing smokers not to smoke in the doorway. That is totally ignored so the stink of fag smoke comes straight back into the pub.I have no problem if people want to smoke but why can't they just obey the rules so others are not inconvenienced by their selfishness.
I think it's a pity something like that would need to be imposed. I'd normally be against bans, but given that the awful practice still continues after all the years I've been around, it may be one of those things it's best to tolerate. Not just for the victims around the smoker (or vaper to split hairs) but also to protect those incapable of protecting themselves.
Sad precedent to set to the government though. After all, where do you draw the line next ? Will it give a green light to any imposition ? We are already protesting against ludicrous woke, green, globalisation type impositions.
