That has to rank as a comment from St Upid.  You cannot accidentally carry a chain saw to a remote rural location and accidentally use said chain saw to cut down an iconic old tree.

I wonder what possible reason they could have but it must have been thought about, planned, etc. Someone must have seen something. I don't know how close it is to a road but he would have had to drive there then walk to the tree with a chainsaw etc etc.

Effing desecration - the teenager needs a Roman style sapling execution. I just hope they can copse the stump and it would be a good thing if the wood could be used for making some form of memorial to the tree?

Actually, using two trees for execution was a Persian creation - but, if I recall correctly so, the Romans used the method.
