//All flights at Luton Airport have been suspended until the afternoon after a huge fire ripped through a terminal car park.

Flights have been halted until 15:00 BST after the fire at the multi-storey caused the building to suffer a "significant structural collapse".

Up to 1,200 vehicles may have been in the car park and subsequently damaged, the fire service said.

Four firefighters and an airport staff member were taken to hospital.//

No cause has yet been given or ruled out but Luton is an area of high immigration and with the situation in Israel escalating, one cannot help but wonder of it's connected.  I hope it isn't.

It's all fact. None of these events are imagined!

What a shock for returning passengers.

There aren't any passengers returning atm, retro

the shock will come when they realise they've landed at Prestwick.

Well, as they may have no car to travel home in, the diversion might be immaterial.

// the shock will come when they realise they've landed at Prestwick. //

allegedly, incoming easyjets were divert to Alicante.

It's on Internet a ceiling light appeared to fall down in flames

that's my kinda diversion, mushroom

Local fire office said it was caused by a fire in a diesel car - Range Rover

Could be a hyrbrid diesel model - like the Range Rover Evoque.  I think, but am not positive, that the electric battery (batteries?) is on the passenger side.

Not all Evoques are hybrid, Baz.

The Chinese MGs would have run away on their own.

Easy tiger!😜

The 4 story car park was only finished last year and did not have a sprinkler system according to the local news ai 1.00 . I live about 5 miles from the airport and can't remember a time when they haven't been working on it

I really dont think you want a sprinker system around cars, especilly lithuim batteried ones.  Plus it would do zilch on a petrol fire or electrical fire.

That was said by the fire chief at the scene, again on the tv news . According to him sprinkler's douse the blaze until the fire service arrives. I'm only repeating what he said

We're down to a building regs issue here, like Grenfell. There is no requirement for a sprinkler system in an open air car park. It might be 'good practise' but at a cost in the tens of thousands, it was probably value engineered out of the project, if considered at all.

That's why I said 'could be', Zacs

naomis musings may not be too far off the mark if you recall that old TV ad.

"We're you wafted here from paradise?

No mate, Luton airport."

We all know who chunters on about paradise now, don't we?

Case closed. :)
