It kind of irks me a little bit that absolutely everyone has to wear a poppy on telly at this time of year. It doesn't mean anything if you HAVE to wear it. My grandad was a POW so I know how much this means, but it should be a free choice, and if removing the poppy to speak to a Muslim felt right for Starmer then so be it.
Cloverjo - the problem is that he is the head of one of the major political parties in the UK and he represents hundreds of thousands of people.
Personally I bought my poppies today, but won't wear them until 9th Nov.. (That's as I was raised.) Sir Keir is not allowed the luxury of personal decisions on this. Everything is political and this removal of his poppy is politically significant.
Sinead - // Fair enough, Andy. Call it what you like, it was a green coat and it didn't go down well with the public. //
I am not calling it 'what I like' - I am calling it what it was, which was not a 'donkey jacket', a very specific type of coat, and not something a senior politician would wear to a Remembrance service - which is why he didn't.
The press gave it that adjective, and inaccurate as it was, it has stuck, which is why it still gets draggged up today.
It was wrong then, and its wrong now.
…and if removing the poppy to speak to a Muslim felt right for Starmer then so be it.
Mr Starmer's comfort is unimportant and there's a fundamental question which needs addressing: why are there people living in this country who may be offended by a poppy (or who others might believe are offended)? The poppy is a symbol of remembrance and hope. It also signifies support for the country’s armed forces.
If there are people in this country for whom that presents a problem they should live somewhere else. If there are politicians in this country who might indulge those whom they believe might be offended, they should not be politicians
