If you believe you are female, even when physical reality shows you are not, then if you are sexually attracted to females you will inevitably consider yourself a lesbian. Op or no op. I don't see the issue here; if you except the premise then the conclusion follows.

Instances like this are examples of someone who likes to say they 'believe in plain speaking', and 'telling it like it is' and similar self-justifying labels.

The simple fact is, the enshrined concept of free speech does not mean that everyone has a right to offer an offensive view, simply because they believe they are right.

That is simply abuse of freedom of speech, which is designed so that everyone can express a viewpoint, but not at the expense of the feelings of a stranger whom they feel they have a right to attack.

Being honest is fine.

Using your honesty to express your opinions as an ignorant bigot, is not fine.

The politician is not ignorant or bigoted.  She knows this person isn't a woman or a lesbian - as do we all.  She, quite rightly, refuses to be party to a lie.  That's all.
