Labour need to beat Noo Laybore's 1997 (10.7%) swing with a record swing of 12.7% to win even a narrow majority. Can Sir Beer and Shazza produce that?

^^^ but PR ws proposed but voted against so were are stuck with our current voting system, at least for the time being

> I can't see that there's going to be any correcting of the national cause with Labour.  Quite the opposite.  Disaster!

Sometimes the national cause and the naomi cause are not the same thing ...

the fat lady has stuck her fingers in her ears and is singing

la-la-la- la-la

Ellipsis, that depends upon what you regard as 'the national cause'.  What would that be?

What was proposed wasn't scarcely PR: it was the AV system which is based on ensuring that the winning candidate gets over 50 per cent of title votes cast. NI has STV for the assembly elections - a real fun form of PR where each constituency elects multiple candidates (6)

> What would that be?

Well, in this case ... booting out the incumbent party if they've outstayed their welcome, almost irrespective of what the alternative is.  Like Labour in 1979 (after only one term, but what a term) and 2010 (after three terms), and the Tories in 1997 (after four terms) and, it would seem, 2024 (also after four terms) ... it's enough.  They've run their race and need some time in opposition for them, and us poor plebs, to recover.

As I said before, the Hard Right are panicking, so they have mounted the Smear the Opposition campaign because they know they can't win on their record.

Their only positive is that Keir is such a useless leader (that's a genuine opinion, not a smear).

I've said it before, where are the giants of yesteryear (on both sides) ?  UK politics in a very sad state this century.

I think alot will depend on what happens in Scotland.

Ellipsis, if you think a change of political hue will enable us poor plebs to recover I fear you will be sadly disappointed... and worse.  It's a hopeless case.

//// Like Labour in 1979 ////

Isn't it funny that when after a few months (often less) of a Tory disaster (e.g. Truss, Partygate) the Righties say it's time to put it behind us and move on, but when they talk of Labour they're quite prepared to go back over 40 years. Hypocrites all.

Canary, I did the last two changes for Labour and Conservative, that's all. If you knew anything at all I'd read before - or even I've read in this thread - you'd know that I thought they were all bad and that - as you said yourself - "UK politics [is] in a very sad state".

Kier Starmer is not a good leader but labour do have some talented and principled people... the tories have nothing and nobody.

Of course PR was voted against. It's flaws make it an appalling choice we'd never be able to reverse.

If Labour had any talented people, untitled, they wouldn't have gormless Starmer running the show.  As for principled, that would depend upon your idea of what constitutes good principles.

18:15, well they are hiding them well! They have Captain Hindsight for leader and "Tory scum" Claire (Shazza) Rayner as deputy!

the most talented person doesn't always end up with the top job sadly naomi... look at liz truss.

but labour have some very good candidates and some people in the party who i would much rather see in charge of things than the tories... there are at present no good tories as far as i am concerned and i suspect i am far from alone

Question Author

oops of course I mean Angela, sorry Claire!

You thought Claire Rayner (who died in 2010) is the Deputy Labour leader?????

They walk among us...

May have been a better choice. Some candidates would do less harm.
