Jeremy Hunt was forced to defend comments he made about his salary of £100K when saying it is not a huge salary!!!!!

Who's he kidding!!! He is trying to make out it is not enough when paying for a mortgage and child care costs! Ahhhh poor man!

it is not small by any means and it is considerably above the average salary but i think he's right... it is not "huge" nor is it by any means out of step with his responsibilities. there are definitely people who have far too much money but i don't think a 100k salary is unreasonable

21:05, see my answer at 20:35

21.05 Some prefer the power to pay, and the limelight. It can sometimes be much more important to them.

it is also worth saying that politicians have access to assets other than wealth.. information, connections, opportunities, prominence. it is quite possible for all of these things to result in absolutely huge dividends once you are through the revolving door!

He's not talking about his own salary. Am I the only one that bothered to read the article?

I think that you will find that Jeremy Hunt was not talking about his own circumstances. The op header is misleading in its content and intent. He was agreeing with a female constituent who was complaining that £100k was the threshold for help with childcare benefits and was not much at all when a mortgage and chioldcare costs were deducted. He agreed with her! He incidently picks up £84,144as an MP and a further £71,674 as Chancellor. A total of £155,818.

Crossed post Tomus. You are not the only one who takes thing on face value without checking the veracity of spurious accusations.

@20:35, there is nothing about why Jeremy Hunt doesn't pay 10x more in the private sector. Only that it's not for the money, which I get ... but what is it for then?

// You are not the only one who takes thing on face value/

You are not the only one who does not take things on face value. Sorry there Tomus.

^^^ Yup!

JH actually gets £86,584 p.a. as an MP, plus a further £67,505 p.a. as a Cabinet Minister, making £154,089 p.a. (plus expenses) in total.

It's not a huge salary, I agree, but it's big enough not to have to go about bitching about how hard done by he is.

If all of these high fliers are worth their salt why is the country in the toilet and due to be flushed?

Obtaining money under false pretenses some might say.

To keep sewer workers employed?

Maybe. Somebody has to process the *** that spews from on high every single day.

Essential workers?

It's a sad reflection on the intelligence of some ABers when the OP makes a knee-jerk reaction without even bothering to properly read & understand the link they have posted!

Yes well said tomus. My heart does not "bleed" for Jeremy Hunt and I am sure he is not short of money but he wasn't pleading poverty on his own or indeed on anyone's behalf. He's right

Just goes to show how politicians haven't got a clue what life is like for ordinary folk in this country. Not a clue.

i admit it! i didn't read the link! egg on my face :)

//but it's big enough not to have to go about bitching about how hard done by he is.//

He isnt, read the article before letting your prejudices take precedence.

I would like to see the number of MP’s halved and their salaries doubled.  That would be much more reasonable for the job.  BUT, no second jobs.
