At least the Crusaders spent a couple of centuries in the Middle East before being chased out. But their "civilisation" - aka Norman brutality - seems not to have lasted either.

The translator's dilemma is an embarrassment, yes, but Afghanistan should have been able to defend their own country after the bad guys had been cleared out. They shouldn't rely on foreign military aid forever more.
