... during his time as PPS to Sunak.

Backing his judgement with money  as to when the election would be held shows confidence in his own judgement.

It does BUT he is an insider & there will always be doubts if he had more to go on than just his own judgement. He shouldn't have bet. If he wasn't so stupid he could have got someone else to bet for him.

He shouldn't have bet at all.  A man completely devoid of integrity.

Jail him.

I disagree, Sandy. Had he been that confident in his own judgement/info from Sunak, he would have opened accounts with numerous 'firms' and had a ton with each.

Of course, the fact he placed the bet a mere few days prior to Sunak's announcement is bound to raise suspicions that he had been forewarned. Proving it is another matter and if Sunak says no-one knew his decision to call a July election before the announcement, the bookies will have to cough up.

//if Sunak says no-one knew his decision to call a July election before the announcement//

I don't think he can say that.   Suchn decisions are not taken alone.

Having blotted his copybook with this little scandal will the path to political advancement be closed to him?

That will depend upon the outcome of the investigation that is taking place.

tories gonna tory

If he's cleared & stands for re-election he is defending a 12,000 majority with Libs & Labour sharing most of the remaining vote.

He should win but he's definitely not helped his cause.

There's a difference between 'political acumen' and insider knowledge.

Political acumen would indicate that betting on something you have prior knowledge of because of a position of privelidge, is not actually acumen at all, political or otherwise.

He's an idiot.

The first rule of insider dealing is you don't actually do the deal yourself.

You just give a nod and a wink to friends of a friend.
