In my opinion, the bookies are at fault for accepting such bets.
Say I went into my local bookies and said that I would like to place a bet on a certain (random) day of the year (within the next 12 months), and I was the person who got to chose that random date – do you think they would accept that bet?
Because that is what they have done in accepting bets on the election date; if I was to tell my mates of the random data I was going to chose (so they could place a bet) on what basis could the bookies complain?
Similarly, if the bookies were to accept bets on the name I would give to my newly born daughter and I informed my mates that the chosen name was ‘Beatrice’ (and they betted on this name), the bookies have only themselves to blame for accepting the bet.

the Y axis is only monetary value - it doesn't show whether it's loads of different punters, or a few betting telephone number sums.
