After for many repeatedly vowing to abolish University Fees he has now increased the cost of studying.

How many more promises is this capable of breaking?

dave - it's pretty devastating for the ones who are genuine academics like my granddaughter (reading Eng. Lit. at Warwick). 

We need academics  tohold, sift, organise and pass on knowledge.  I agree that Blair made almost every job degree dependant... completely stupid as I said at the time.

For most  qualifications we would do a lot better to revert to the previous status quo.  Blair b8888ered it up.

But unlike you I will answer you question.  I have 2 great grandchildren, and the eldest is , or maybe was, due to start University next year.  The youngest will be eligible to start University in 2 years time.  I worry that they may not be able to afford the education that their parents received.  That is how affects me.  O.K.

I have worked with a lot of people that went to Uni and honestly not a blind bit of sense in them! 

No idea how to work in a team, how to do a days work, and some of the degrees they did!!

I despair!

I agree that  many of the students at university shouldn't be there. But I don't think the increase in fees will be a disincentive- because repayments are based on income  (as a % of income over the threshold) not on the amount borrowed- and some never earn enough to pay a penny back, whilst most don't pay back to cover the current fees so won't pay a penny more after the fee increase.

Most wont pay it anyway.  So many degrees arent worth the paper they are written on and, as DDIL points out, they are not even educated to take on any role.  The jobs they can get tend not to pay well (apart from the ones that should be degrees) so they never have to paty it back.

Have they actually considered why they want to go to University? If not, why not? Why would anyone consider embarking on an exercise that will cost them quite a large sum of money and three years of their life  if they hadn't properly considered why they want to do it? (I know the probable answer to that but thought I'd seek your views).

I agree with sentiments expressed regarding degrees that are not worth the paper they are written on, and there should be an enquiry why these degrees are even on offer to students. By ridding the universities of such degrees it may free up space and time to educate those whose degrees have a positive impact on this countries well being.

Having said that, it doesn't distract from the point that once again, in a very short space of time, Starmer has broken another promise, or committment, that he has publicly made. Again, how many more broken promises are acceptable before people will realise the full extent of damage that this Government is likely to inflict upon us.

gramps 85.  the pledge was droped 18 months ago.  Labour were elected 5 months ago.  If anyone voted for them on the strength of free uni education, they dont deserve to go to uni coz they are a bit thick!

I would suggest introducing a 2 tier system, the PM should like that, anyway. Define all the degrees then the proper ones are a third of the price of the mickey mouse ones which must subsidise the proper ones. That's the gist of it, something along those lines.

newjudge 9.01  My eldest great granddaughter has aspirations of becoming a vet and needs to go university to enable her to qualify. So she has to get the necessary degree in order to be able to practice her chosen profession.  I take your point regarding my youngest as she has yet to decide on her chosen career.

Bednobs 09.39.  I have trawled as much as I can, and have yet to find evidence that this pledge had been dropped.  Perhaps you could provide the evidence.

I am an external at Manchester Uni - and all the student seems er pukkah - doing proper courses - Economics, eek history, finance and banking
