Probably standard procedure to allow maximum freedom for the investigation.

The wombles love it when they get to close an entire motorway even though 1 lane would do. The body was in the undergrowth at the side.

No other country does this(length of time), makes plod feel important I exepct.

Just put a tent up and close one lane for a few hundred yards while they investigate. It's like when theirs a collision, just get the mess scraped up, tidy up and get the motorway reopened sharpish instead of fannnying about.
