Oh no, how awful 😢

Question Author

Imagine if either the plane or helicopter came down on a populated area!

There's that to be grateful for, I suppose, but still a terrible event. My thoughts are with their loved ones and and those amazing Emergency Workers.

What were air traffic control doing?

Having smoko?

-- answer removed --

It appears the copter crashed into the plane after failing to respond to air traffic comms. The aircrafts' on-board systems should have warned of impending collision,

I wonder why military copters are making night flights over populated areas with restricted airspace.🙄

President Trump seems to have strong opinions on this.

See if that works.

Yes, he says it shouldnt have happened.

He is correct.

I rerad somewhere it was a training flight. Military personnel need to be able to cope with all eventualities.

Training flight or not, if commercial flightws are operating they need to be in contact with ATC.

"The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport," Trump wrote.

"The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing.

"Why didn't the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn't the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane.

"This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!"

Thank you, Mr President, for your insight.

CCTV footage of the actual collision is circulating widely on social media. although from some distance away, the helicopter can be seen approaching the plane, followed by the resulting mid air explosion.

to be fair to "the Donald" (although, why?), if all he knows about the incident is seeing that video, then his remarks are fair comment.

Very sad, without knowing anymore than most I agree with some posts that surely it could easily have been avoided a tragedy non the less.

Could there have been GPS interference? It seems quite close to the White House. I believe it goes on a lot, although I don't know if there is history of it over the USA.

Terrible place to crash.

One would hope a Military pilot could fly without GPS.  And he still has eyes, the plane is big and well lit and they must have known civilian craft could be in the area surely.  So barring a medical issue one has to ask why?

One, or both, must have had their transponder switched off otherwise they would have been warned of an impending collision.  U S Military aircraft are very fond of switching theirs off very quickly.

According to the report I read they use different tracking systems.  Let's hope real lessons are learnt so the victims didn't die in vain (but I won't hold my breath).

Bit disingenuous to say they were searching for survivors. Anyone who didn't die in the crash would surely succumb to the cold in a matter of minutes in the freezing river.

If anyone is interested, this is a first report by Juan Brown, an aircraft accident reviewer. He recently reviewed the latest information regarding the South Korean crash. Some of this is quite technical and it lasts for 7:37 minutes.

Trump is saying far too much at the wrong time.
