Despite suffering a humiliating defeat in the House of Lords over this subject, the Govt still plans to press ahead with the idea, reversing the decision in the Commons.With prices for these things estimated at between �30 and �500 depending on whom you believe, are they really going to accomplish what is expected of them or is it just another erosion of our civil liberties?

Ah, the old "I've got nothing to hide" approach, I knew it would appear sooner or later. Its not about whether you've got something to hide, its about whether you want to or if its really necessary to show. You'll use a bathroom every day when you go for a shower or bath or something else - you've got nothing to hide there but its not exactly something that you want or need to show to the world is it??! My point is that no single multipurpose item should contain such a large amount of information - the capacity for error and abuse is far too great. We could have our actions tracked, everything would come to a standstill should a hacker feel he had been wronged and that's just for starters. Proposing such a ridiculously flawed scheme is bad enough as it is, but to suggest that we would have to pay for these damn things is bulls**t
Before I met my husband 9 years ago, I had never been abroad, so I didn't possess a Passport and I didn't drive, so I didn't have a driving licence (I now have both!). When ID cards were first suggested I must admit that I was in favour of them, if only for the fact that people who didn't have other forms of identification would then have one. But since the cost has been revealed and no-one is sure what information will be included, I am totally against them.
diana.m - in response to your inquiry, ID cards are intended to include the owner's biometric details, health details and more. They have been suggested to incorporate driving licenses and birth certificates too. It has been suggested that they might be required in all areas of life from watching an 18 rated film to picking up your prescription from the chemists and more (though I do admit I have lost track of the debate on ID cards so I may be way off the mark)
Its also not so much what they will do now, but what they may do in the future.
Think about some legislation that has just been passed - the Terrorism Bill. When it was being discussed, everyone was assured that only terrorists would be affected and that it wouldn't infringe normal people.
Not long after wards, this act is used to evict a 80 year old man for heckling.
They may say that you don't need it for health insurance, but will they change their minds?
The other major issue I have is there is not one IT project that I know of that this government has managed to get right. If anyone knows any different I would love to know.
do you think having to use them to buy adult things etc might protect children, against paedophillia and other horrors. And if biometric includes weight they would have to update my records every month. But although I can see how some people see these details as invading their privacy I can see some advantages to the general public. Is it because of the 1984 George Orwell scenario that scares people. But they wouldnt be able to see me on the loo would they? Or was that just an example of how intrusive it could get?
Forgive me SarcausDick-I didn't read your recent post re.ID cards and the potential consequences for you as a 18 rated fim viewer and a picker-up of prescriptions.
You have absolutely nothing to fear from watching mucky movies or from your medical condition.
