British citizenship through descent?

Hello, I hope someone can shed light on my issue. My husband's mother and maternal family are British and we are considering someday coming to live in England if my husband can attain citizenship through descent. (He was born in the U.S. but his mum was and always has been Brit citizen. ) I found out that they now require a citizenship, Life in the UK test for citizenship, but am not certain whether that is only for those wanting to be naturalized or if my husband will have to take the test as well. Does anyone know, and would they kindly let me know as we'd like to start moving forward with plans to start the application process if possible. Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies! I have been reading up on the website mentioned in the second reply. I don't think I qualify myself for any other citizenships as my ancestors were American as far back as great-great grandparents (then we have English as well as Irish). Husband's father was born here in the States as well. His mother said he could get an Irish passport because her mother was born in Ireland. Wonder if that would be worth pursuing since both Ireland and England are EU, right? Would anyone, especially rojash, tell me how they like life in the UK? I've only been over there twice but just have this feeling when I'm there that it's where I want to be. Thanks everyone! Anyone born before 1/1/83 could only obtain citizenship by descent through their FATHER. After that date citizenship can be passed on through either parent. Looks as though you would both have to naturalise as British Citizens.

As a side issue to this complicated thread. What is the position of somebody born in Ireland pre 1921 and the creation of the Irish Free State? coastalsc says her husband's grandmother was born in Ireland. If this was pre 1921 there was no such thing as Irish citizenship so she would have been a British citizen (I think). Would using this qualify for a passport application in 2006?

All these interesting answers remind me of my uncle who was born in Egypt when his parents were in married quarters with the RAF.
The trouble he had in trying to prove his British nationality when applying for a passport was unbelievable.
