They shouldn't face a backlash as you say, but if they do, it's because certain parts of our society aren't as far down the road of acceptance as others.
I look forward to the day when we have loads and loads of gay footballers. At some point it will be irrelevant - look how far we've come from the days when 'fans' used to shout monkey sounds at black footballers.
Whilst gay sportmen/women still feel they have to stay in the closet, newspapers will still feed on their fear.
Someone on here has coined the wonderful phrase - 'There's a difference between the public interest and what interests the public' and that really sums it up.
Editors will print what the public want to read - we really do get the press we deserve.
Sadly, people are still in the Dark Ages when it comes to silly nonsense about other people - look at the rise in gossip magazines showing unflattering images of famous people.
It;s the world we live in, so no, it doesn;t matter if the entire Football League is gay ... unless you are a tabloid reader, and they are in the majority.
