Anybody recognise this film?

I'm trying to track down the name of a film my mother saw years ago. Family drama thing, agreesive and demanding father that no-body likes, two sons one the spoiled heir and the other is a hard-working outcast (she thinks the latter son might be the result of an affair by the father or that they were half-brothers or something). Anyway the spoiled son goes totally off the rails and then takes off to 'start again', what he doesn't know is that his girlfriend is pregnant. The girlfirend is very upset, the film's set in the 50's or 60's, confides in the other son who does the noble thing and marries her. Mum thought the film had john wayne in it as the father and was called something like 'the white house on the hill' but i've done some googling on the name and on all JW's films and so far no luck. Anybody got any ideas?

Hi araucaria
Hope you are successful, but my Films to Video book doesn't list it (as mentioned by kempie), so maybe you'll have to wait till it comes round again on TV (it was on terrestial a short while ago).
Mitch has always been one of my favourites, but I fell in love with GP [a smile to melt the toughest cookie!]. No big fan of Mr Perma-tan though!
Good Film, excellent acting...
