The Philippines House of Representatives impeached President Joseph Estrada on four charges of corruption and constitutional violations, opening the way to an unprecedented Senate trial that could convict and remove him from office. Some 115 out of the 218 members of the Lower House signed the articles of impeachment of the president, who was accused last month of receiving illegal gambling pay-offs and a cut of provincial taxes.
