Just heard on the radio. A real shame, a father of two aswell.
He had to be the most enthusiastic wildlife presenter I have ever seen, his passion outshone most others. He done a lot of good things for the animal world.

RIP Steve.

It IS sad, you 'd think as he got older he would have become a bit wiser. The one programme that sticks in my mind was somewhere in Malaysia I think, where he rescued a croc from a disgusting dirty 'pond' and re-homed it . He did a lot of good work for wild life and animals in general. I'm glad it wasn't a croc that killed him that would have been ironic ! RIP Steve.

Terribly sad news to wake up to this morning, He was always so interesting to watch. My heart goes out to his wife and the two young children that he has left behind.

Perhaps it was his fate. But ironically the way he died was a bit of a freak accident, not the inevitable chomping.

It was inevitable. He was a risk taker, and he knew it, but was maybe one of those who could live no other way. I imagine if he ever thought he was going to die prematurely like this, then this is how he'd want it to happen - not rotting away from cancer or old age in some nursing home.

I was like "WHAT" this morning. Very upsetting to hear the news when I was watching GMTV.

i don't think i could get any peace. He wrestled with crocs, swam with sharks and handled deadly snakes all of these things could have killed him and then a sting ray which has only killed one other person since 1945 kills him. Two young children too. i have to admit i loved him. I thought his shows were brill. It was the first thing i heard this morning, i have to say i'm deeply saddened. But i suppose he lived his life on the wild side.

I dont know about inevitable, more likely I suppose. I liked him, I enjoyed his shows.

all our deaths are inevitable... but he didn't get eaten by a croc (he did know what he was doing). Death by stingray is very rare, and seems just to have been a freak accident. Terrible shame.

Actually Dummkopf, it was in Indonesia and not only did he saved that old croc from that claustrophobic pond, he also gave some contribution to the church behind which the pond was at. Not only was this guy enthusiastic and passionate about what he does, he is contagious. A part of me always thought that he was invincible and that he was going to live until he's 100 or so but the other part was afraid that something like this was going to happen one day.

Call it a freak accident if you like but I'd prefer to remember him the way his friend and producer put it: He died doing what he loves best. And even though all our deaths are inevitable, not many can go the same way as Steve Irwin did.

Yes, a great shame indeed! I hadn't realised until I watched a documentary about him just how dedicated and committed to the environment and to native Australian wildlife he was! Deepest sympathy to his family and friends!

How does a stingray actually kill? Is it the venom or the wound that kills?

Usually the wound- some of the barbs can be up to 30cm long. Wounds tend to be in the legs and ocassionaly complications arise due to serious infection. He has been incredibly unlucky.

Its very saddening but the thing thats saddened me more today is I've already got a joke e-mail about it, where someone has already gone to the trouble of doing a joke picture. Sick people out there and even sicker to pass it on.

I've no doubt that he loved animals with a passion, however I really didn't like the way he prodded, poked and generally goaded animals for cheap entertainment.

Yes it's sad that he's died, even sadder for his wife and children, however it is inevitable that it's happened sooner rather than later.

Yes 4getmenot, I have received an email where there is a spoof picture of the TV studios and "stingray" saying it wasn't them. There was the inevitable picture of the puppet from stingray on the studio screen. Sad but expected!!
