Jack Straw has just said there are no plans to create a European Super State...yeah right. Who is the bigger mug, Jack Straw for thinking people believe him, or the people that actually believe him ?

This is close to being - if not strictly-speaking, actually - what lawyers might call a leading question. That is, it assumes that someone is a mug. But what if no-one is a mug...namely, that Jack Straw and those who believe him are actually right?

You got me there !, tell you what I'll withdraw the question, and ask this instead, Who believes Jack Straws statement that there are no plans for a European Super State ?
There may well be such plans, Baz, but I suspect they exist only in a few - mainly French - egomaniacal brains. At least three quarters of the clauses in the proposed 'Constitution' will be those signed-up-to by previous Conservative Prime Ministers...eg Thatcher's Single European Act signature in 1986 and Major's effort at Maastricht in the early 90s, which promised (quote) "ever-closer union with Europe"...so people shouldn't just be picking on poor old Jack! (Incidentally, we were not offered referenda on either of the earlier sign-ups I've just mentioned.) Cheers

Who cares, i hope Britains people will vote a big fat No!! to the European Super State
We are already part of a European Super State whether we like it or not. We don't use Euros (yet) but we obey the European Courts, directives etc.

Couldn't agree more Gef. If the aim is not a super state what is the point of it all ?
I still don't understand how we've gone from what was sold to us [30 years ago] as the European Economic Community [ie a trading community], to the European Union which appears to govern everything we do from shops opening on Easter Sunday [or not] to Parma Ham can only be sliced & packed in Parma or you can't call it that. I think there's too many bureaucrats with too much time on their hands.
