Dogs
After reading the horrible article of the baby girl being killed by 2 rottweilers at the weekend I'd like to ask do you think these attacks that are happening more frequently now, are the fault of the owners or the dogs?

Domestication simply trains a dog to live in human society - it does not, and could not eradicate its urge to respond to its animal instincts, and this is the reason why these attacks happen.
I think you could expertly train a dog, and it could still turn, although the chances of it doing so are drastically reduced, the chance is still there, and as in these tragic cases, the animal only has to turn once.
I have to reiterate my point - dogs are unpredictable animals, training may reduce that unpredictability, but it will never eradicate it - and that is something that owners, and people with children who are around dogs, should always remember, and act accordingly. this was sadly not the case here, with tragic consequences.

Police will always say it is not linked....but if the grandpaqrents were attacked and one of them (apparently the girlfriend of the grandfather) was killed it was no doubt a revenge attack...probably by one of the family of the child who was killed. It appears that the mother of the child was living with her new boy friend at the time of the attack.
the 2 have to be related incidents.....

you're right redcrx I am wary of some dogs I dont make them all out to be vicious as had a dog myself. I havent actually decided one way or another because i can see sense from everyones view, which is why saying if you can put together an argument annoyed me. Its an answerbank not an argument website. and as you said was just asking opinions and didnt need that kind of rudeness towards myself. :-)

Loads of interesting points, but consider this - someone made a horrible mistake. They may have left a window open or forgot to close an external door.
That's all it MAY have taken...and whoever done that will know that the baby died in the absolute worst way possible.
This is what keeps going through my mind...can you imagine what must be going through the parents' minds?
Incidentally, going back to the point raised earlier...aren't some dogs more agressive than others?
I mean, Dobies, Rotts and Pit Bulls are naturally more agressive than poodles...
...however, I would LOVE to see poodle guard dogs.

It's NOT the same grandparents who owned the pub acording to the Daily Mail (I know the source has it's issues, but that's another thread).

If its a revenge attack then it would be on the ones looking after the child surely? The son of the pub owners was in the pub with his girlfriend and I take it her daughter, as far as I knew the pub owners were on holiday so therefore this would be the girls parents anyway, who werent the pub owners, so why get revenge on them? and sp1814 it is terrible and that will live with them for the rest of their lives, and some people say all dogs are different but I agree I stay away from certain breeds where as I cant see a king charles spaniel mauling anyone.
sp1814 - this site may be of interest.
It's a handy guide for disguising your doberman as a poodle!! The photos are really funny. I know I am being tounge in cheek, but this thread is getting a litttle heated.

how strange! Didn't reports say the grandparents were on holiday? Anyway its the owners fault for having "guard dogs" in a public place in the middle of an estate! who felt two dangerous dogs prowling the roof was a necessity?
And of course its the parents fault for leaving the infant unattended.
how sad.

Mr tall, i cant see how such things as alarms would help. Plus in the time it took to get a baseball bat and stop the dog horrendous damage would be caused.
In an act of naivity, believing the dogs to be safe, these parents have lost a child and have to live with that guilt for the rest of their lives regardless of what caused it (dogs escaping or whatever). It looks that, by association, another family member has lost hers too. there were witnesses who will also live with the memories forever of that innocent child death.

Its all very sad, now this. I wonder if its connected.
