A BBC1 Drama with John Hurt

I seem to recall BBC1 showing a 1 off drama at christmas either late 80's or early 90's that starred John Hurt.From what i can remember John Hurt befriends these 2 young girls i think the girls were friends.All i seem to recall is the ending where 1 of the girls shoots John Hurts character & her friend.She basically tells the cops that John Hurt shot her friend but unknown to her,her friend that she shot has survived,so the girl will get found out.

I have had a look over at http://www.imdb.com for the films of John Hurt but because i'm unsure of the actual year i'm at a lost.

So can anyone help with the title of this drama? Thanxs
