birching/overcrowded prisons

following on from my earlier question about capital punishment, would birching be an option for some criminals instead of prison (and ease the overcrowding problem).While i am against the use of corpral punishment on children i think that publicaly humiliating a granny beater or a kiddie fiddler would be a more effective deterrent than jail (though in the case of kiddie fiddlers and kiddie pornographers castration might be a better option...ok then, birching AND castration for these scum)

Might work for some, but I'm sure a certain type of yobby thug would see a birching as a badge of honour - something to boast about.

Castration would not work for every sex offender. They are usually not compelled by sexual urges, but by a strong desire to humiliate, denigrate and abuse their victims. If they were unable to use the equipment they were born with, they would find something else to use instead.

I say bring back the birch! I can see your point Ethel as to some yobs showing off their scars but I would imagine 10-20 lashes with the cat o nine tails would flipping well hurt and hopefully make the offender think twice about re offending.

I'm convinced that for most offenders, severe public humiliation is the answer ...birching, stoning, hanging and indeed any kind of ritual torture would go a long way to solving the problems in this country. OK, you're not going to deter everyone, but it's a damn fine start.

hear hear!!!!!!!!!! Flog em humiliate them, and for child offenders cut there hands off and castrate them!, there is absoluely no deterent in this country atall

I think a better option, would be the Stocks, in a fenced off area where the public could see them, a big notice above them stating their misdemeanor, and the public could be charged a small fee to be allowed in, and under supervision, to throw soft fruit etc at them.

As you say, humiliate them, and this would certainly fit the bill.
