What Makes You Proud of Your Country?
27 Answers
This will undoubtedly be banned but following the other posts got me think about the fact that only the negative things get promoted in the media. I thought about all the things that make me so proud of my country (I live in England but I am actually 1/4 English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish so I have a foot and hand in all countries lol!) that it moved me to tears. My question applies what ever country your from by the way.
1. The crowd spontaneously singing 'Always Look On The Bright Side of Life' when we lost the bid for the Manchester Olympics.
2. War Veterans at the Cenotaph and Chelsea Pensioners.
3. The way complete strangers helped those injured in disasters such as the July 7th bombings/ Hatfield Train Crash/Moorgate Tube.
4. Spitfires.
5. The way we support the under dog.
6. The way despite the media saying no-one was interested in the Queen anymore middle england turned out in their hundreds of thousands just to prove them wrong! ( I'm not particularly a Royalist but I loved the dig at the media).
7. Our great sportspeople who every now and then make the world sit up and take notice, like Torvill and Dean, Steve Redgrave, Linford Christie etc.
the list goes on..................

Would that be the Empire that made Britain great by sending soldiers with cannon everytime the "fuzzy-wuzzies" wanted us out?
Or the Empire that thought that the best way to show how great a nation we were was to flog opium to the Chinese and to send gunboats when the Chinese Emperor tried to ban it.
I feel a tear welling up in my eye
