I am going to take an extensive trip starting in USA, driving through Central and South America, then flying to South Africa. If I drive my car from USA to Brazil, can I sell it in Brazil? If so, what are the particulars? If not, any suggestions on what to do with the vehicle once I get to Rio?

Darien Gap - I will have my vehicle shipped from Panama to Colombia or Ecuador - I've done a bit more research since posting my question - seems that I can't sell it in Brazil unless I'm very discreet about it - car sale in Uraguay seems more promising.

The problem you MAY find is that in many countries if you import a car temporarily it will be noted in your passport. If when you leave the country you are not taking the car with you you could be in big time trouble.

You'd need to do some research to find out how far this applies in S America.

Hello I am currently in Costa Rica doing exactly the same Journey as your planning. We are shipping from Panama to Columbia the first week in Jan. I was also looking to sell in Brazil but have been advised against it. There are problems in trying to sell in Argentine as well as the car has to in the country one year before you can sell it. A Fellow traveller suggested Paraguay he had a friend who sold his thier without any problems.
