The latest education reform from this Government is the abolition of catchment areas. This would mean, presumably, that children would become eligible for places at, say, the exclusive London Oratory school, even though they live miles away. I wonder why no one thought of that until now.

Come on - how funny is that?

I wonder if Government ministers' children would get randomly assigned to schools under this scheme?

My local LEA seem to have already started this policy. I know of a child who lives directly opposite our local secondary school (a good, sought-after school) but has been assigned to the worst school in the area - a bus ride away in the town centre!

This is pure smoke and mirrors.

They are not introducing entrance by examination so how will the oversubscribed schools determine who is accepted. They will do a list based on how close the child lives to the school.

The concept of catchment area will go but it will still be a proximity test in most cases. For the vast majority of people nothing will change.

Catchment area are not hard and fast in all cases anyway. My own children go to a comprehensive school over the boundry in a different county from where we live.

We put their names down, they were accepted on proximity.

precede what you want in italics with a capital I in trangular brackets <> to close italics put a forward slash / betweel the < and the I

like this <Italics>word</Italics> only replace the word Italics with the letter I
