Newcastle under Lyme

As a kid in the late '40s early '50s I lived in Newcastle (Clayton, actually) and then we moved to Canada. I recall that once a week a market day was held on High Street, and vendors would erect stalls and sell all kinds of neat stuff. Also, every so often, a cattle market was held in another area of town. These two events were a great source of fun and amusement for kids at that time: no cell-phones, video-games, t.v., etc..
If there are any ABers living in Newcastle, could you please let me know if these two events still occur?

The cattle market has long gone but the market on the Stones is still there! I'm not old enough to know if it is the same as in the 50's but it's still quite a good market, it's on four days per week.

Thanks, CheekyChops. You mention the "Stones" and that reminded me of the cobblestones on one side of High Street.Also, a portion of your user-name brought back memories of a butcher shop named Cheedles (with saw-dust on the floor!) located on High Street.

Yep, amazingly enough it is still known as 'The Stones' even though it was tarmaced over years ago! Still in the same place though, at the end of the high street. Closed to traffic now which is probably why the market is there for more days.

I'm so old that I remember going to school as St Mary's and the bomb shelters were still situated on the playground!
