My 14 year old nephew has been smoking for two years. He says he can't give up. How can we make him see sense? He was grounded for a few months, but was recently caught with cigarettes again.

One day, when everyone was out, I tried rolling my own using one of my dad's rizla papers and some of his pipe tobacco. I was as sick as a dog and felt nauceous everytime I smelt cigarette smoke - an effect which lasted approx. 6 months. Only a idea - but it put me off!
It is as hard to give up smoking after two years as it is after twenty, so don't expect it to beany easier for him than for an adult. The boy surely already knows the down sides of smoking - it's pushed at them so much these days, it's hard to ignore. If he genuinely wants to give up, his GP can help. Many surgeries these days hold special clinics for people trying to kick the habit, and GPs and their staff have a remit to support people who want to pack it in - it doesn't matter how old someone is or how long they've been smoking.
I was about the same age as your nephew when I started smoking. That was nearly fifty years ago.
I eventually packed up last August, having spent a fortune on cigarettes and not improved my health. I stopped smoking having read Allen Carr's book - The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. I am not suggesting that simply reading the book will do the trick - there has to be a will to stop as well, but it would be a start. Good luck with your efforts.

Tell him that every cigarette causes 25,000 cell mutations in his body and if they don't get fixed, it could build up into cancer at a very young age. Smoking is SO bad for you. I made my fella stop as soon as I met him cause it was like licking an ashtray whenever we kissed. Oh, tell him that too, no girls will want to kiss him when he stinks! :p
