20 Answers
hi all , what do you all think of dogs that are kept out in kennles ????? thing is as i have said in other question i have 3 dogs and thinking of getting maybe another 3 all small dogs might add. i am also thinking of breeding , now at moment my 3 dogs live in the house with us, but as thinking of breeding a few people have told me i might be better off putting them all outside in kennel, ?? ( which im not totally happy with ) but !!!! thinking of it . now if and i say if ?? i do they would live in a porta cabin which at the moment is the childrens den it is fully insulated and has heater , tv,carpet, sofa, which would all be left in there for them ,
the size is 8ft by 8ft square ,
the run is 15ft lengh by 8ft width,
which is used for the pool table and so on at mo ,
now the thing is i have been reading on the net, that dogs kept out side are sad dogs
as they want to be with the pack leader as much as poss ( us the mom or dad (human being the leader ) , and i dont want to do this if they are going to be sad ,
if i do keep them out side , i was thinking of having 2 in each night taking it in turns and also as we go up the caravan most weekends also taking 2 at a time to van which would be an ongoing thing , which means they would have a life soley as out door dogs , they would still be spoilt by myself husband and children , and also when any have litters would be inside for the duration ( i would never keep mum and babies out side ) i would also like to add i would by no means be a byb i promise they would all still be loveing family pets of ours , this is just for me , as i am at home all day every day . please as many replys as poss ?????

You sound like you are starting a puppy breeding establishment.

oh myyyyy what did i say and repeat saying i will by no means i repeat no means become a byb i repeat i will not be a byb , the 3 dogs i have is a jack russle she is spayed and is 5 years . i have a westie who is also spayed 3 years , and i have a yorkie girl who is 2 which i am thinking ( thinking of having a litter from . and when i say maybe 3 more dogs woulod be i male yorkie and poss 2 more girls of which would have a litter each , then i would have them also spayed and kept as family pets and all eaither remain living outside in porta cabin or in home with us , i am not trying to set up a breeding establishment , and i really dont take kindly to people who judge so quickly .
I couldn't keep my dogs outside, they are family pets, ie.they are part of the family, the way you are describing things spells BYB, whichever way you look at it, you want to keep the dogs in a porta cabin? typical BYB, if I was looking for a Yorkie pup and saw dogs kept in a porta cabin I would beat a hasty retreat!
Sorry hun....but dogs kept in a Porta Cabin are not family pets. Simple as that!! I have three Yorkies one of whom has been bred from and they have the run of my house and garden....as did my late Dane and as will my rescue Dane that I collect on Saturday! She will infact have her own bedroom [with leather sofas ;O] ]. All dogs need love and attention AND individual care, they are their own little souls and deserve to be treated as such.

to all that asume i am trying to be a byb and also have my dogs in porta cabin could you kindly read AGAIN , I AM INDEED asking for advise here NOT INSULTS , did i say they were in a porta cabin already NO and could someone tell me how they think a wooden kennle is assumed to be ok as supposed to a porta cabin anyway , which is completely water proof fully insulated originally used as offices on sites , and yet most put dogs in a damp wooden kennle no heating etc, yet i seem to have been CONEMMED for simply thinking of doing YET if you read correctly i stated i am confussed as what to do and was simply asking for advise from you all , i have not put my dogs out there i was asking .
I hate to be the odd one out but my dogs live outside so to speak. If I go out They go out in their large yard with views of the road and people passing and theit cosy kennel full of bedding. They are often seen lounging in the sun on a nice day and often sit in the rain of their own accord. They have frest air, space to run around in and never have to cross their legs till I come home. They have fur coats to keep them warm and my vet reckons this is one reason why my ailing gsd has lived so long. When I return to the house they are let in and showered with love and attention and simply adore my children and the children adore them. At bed time theg go out with a treat and snuggle together till morning again not having to cross their legs in the early hours till I get up.They are pets who simply have a bed outside. I do not consider myself cruel but more letting a dog have the freedom that they naturally have. They are denied nothing they need which includes love and affection.
I would love to take them everywhere with me but thay are not allowed into the school grounds to drop the children off and I wil not tie them up outside. They are not allowed in my mothers house. They do come camping with us sometimes. I take them where I can and the rest of the time they have freedom.
I do worry that your plan involves so many dogs that it will be difficult to give them all attention and wonder why you require so many to make you happy. I would have thought 3 was enough. Remember a dog is a dog not a human and to rotate who goes where is going to confuse tha natural rank structure between them. If their bed is outside it is outside. Your other post says they all sleep on different beds. Would you swap which beds they sleep onevery night?
I would leave the kids in the portacabin and get a propper kennel that is not too big but just nice and cosy. Eirher fence the garden fully or have a good run. Good luck in whatever you decide

Can I ask why youre thinking of breeding from the 2yo yorkie you already have and from the other 2 girls youre thinking of getting?
There are 3 types of breeders:
good breeders who are breeding for the better of the breed,
back yard breeders (BYBs) who breed for pin money and
puppy farmers (and I wont even go there!)
Which category do you fit into?
PS The answer to your Portacabin question is a definite no!

There is a very big difference between keeping a GSD in a warm insulated outside kennel with lots of additional exercise, and keeping a tiny Yorkie outside. They need to be kept indoors and be with you. There is no way I would sell you a puppy to live outside and just be bred from. However, it seems to me you have already decided, lets face it, you have even given us the measurements for their 'kennel'. Sorry, but you will not get agreement from me, and if you find my comments offensive - tough, I was hoping they might put you off.
lankeela ......... i do find your comments offensive yes , i gave the measurments and as much information as i could so you could all get a good picture of what i was describing , as i have reapeted many times, i was thinking about this after so many comments of people i have been talking to , in which they all said if i had that many dogs i would put them out there in porta cabin , as it has so much space so on , every one that has come to my home and seen how cosey it is have said this to me , NOW as i said i wasnt keen on doing this , as i DO love my dogs they are INFACT my little babies, as i am writing this they are all on MY bed watching me , not STUCK OUT SIDE IN THE DAM PORTA CABIN , i could not possibly describe to you all how well looked after and cherrished my dogs are to me as you have all made up your own judgment on me, shame on you .
as for the breeding of the yorkies, that was not going to be just yet , i have been reading on this for a few years , and first would like to get my other 2 girls and try and begin to show them first as it is of great interest of mine after reading for so long about it , then after maybe have a litter from each of them , as i am at home all day EVERDAY . i am not going into this lightly at all and this is why i came here to get as much feed back before , IF I WAS GOING TO BE A BYB do you really think i would have come here for approval NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. . BUT TO PUT YOU ALL AT REST AFTER A LONG CONVERSATION WITH MY HUSBAND AND CHILDREN LAST NIGHT WE HAVE DECIDED TO KEEP THE PORTA CABIN AS THE CHILDRENS DEN, THIS IS THE DECISION ( I WAS HOPING FOR ) AND YES FROM WHAT YOU HAVE ALL SAID TOO SO I DO THANK YOU ALL FOR THAT .

Well my seven all sleep in or on my bed. Two of them put themselves to bed when they think its time and the rest wait for me. They do keep my feet warm in the cold weather, but I get the occasional grizzle if I want to stretch out my legs!
Glad you have decided against the porta cabin.
Please think long and hard about the breeding. I will try to find a couple of articles that usually manage to put people off!

hi thanks all for your comments . lankeela you will be pleased to know i have now changed my mind , about the breeding , but will still be getting me some more yorkie's in which i hope to get into the showing start of things , first with the kindergarden thing . and then onto junior showing i think its called . lankeela i saw in another post about dirty behinds and you asked what the owner fed dog on , as i have had same prob with my yorkie she gets rather dirty oly a few times, i feed all my dogs on james welbeloved lamb and rice or turkey and rice, but i do however feed them i think maybe too many treats as in our biscuits and sandwhich pieces ( do you think i should stop this ) it is sooooooo hard though when they all sit there in a orw looking up at you its hard to say no . i do also give them james welbeloved treats too but they would much rather eat our food or the cheap dog treats you can buy which i dont like to but they do seam to prefere any sugestions thanks coleen
I have just answered the q on dirty bums! I eat every single item of food with seven sets of eyes pleading with me for a piece. They get the tiniest little morsel of what I am eating (apart from chocolate of course) once I have finished. Its a case of everything in moderation, if they like cheap treats then all well and good, but just don't overdo it.
There are some pretty mixed opinions here, but I also think that keeping dogs outside depends on where you live, how much room you have and the area. I live on quite a newish housing site with a public footpath that runs down one side of the garden perimeter. I, for one could not keep either of my dogs outside (sheltie & dobermann) for the following reasons: 1) They would likely bark at passers by and annoy the neighbours 2) I would not feel they were safe & dont even leave them in the garden alone 3) the dobermann I have was a rescue and lived permanently outside in a kennel until she arrived with me - she was in awful condition - dobermanns are not outside dogs - they have little protection against the elements (even with shelter) with their thin short coats. There are people who have dogs that live outside and do very well ( I know 2 dogs that do) - it's down to the person's circumstances and choice, so let's not be too judgemental here.
Oh & Johnny37 just for the record - don't voice your opinion about others on this site when you know nothing about us - for example -some people may have a lot of dogs if they are breeders, some take in and foster dogs ( I know a lady who has 10 dogs awaiting new homes - she does a brilliant job) and some like myself just love dogs and they are a BIG part of our lives ....... and to add to Lankeela's comment - at least dogs don't answer back like some men do!
